The Problem

Tools

Figma Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator

Users struggle to manage their subscriptions efficiently due to a lack of transparency and control. They experience difficulty in canceling unwanted subscriptions, frustration with hidden renewal processes, and limited access to better deals. Additionally, concerns about app security prevent some users from linking their financial information.

The Solution

Comprehensive Subscription Management App Designed for Transparency, Control, and Security.

Competitive Research

To understand the user experience landscape for subscription management apps, I conducted a competitive analysis of three leading players: TRIM, TrackMySubs, and TrueBill. This analysis focused on identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement, informing the design of my own subscription dashboard mobile app.

User Research Goldmine:
Uncovering the UX Needs of Subscription Management

To gain a deep understanding of user pain points and desired functionalities for a subscription management app, I conducted user interviews with five potential users. Through these interviews, I identified three key areas of frustration that informed the design of my app:

Unlocking a Pain-Free Subscription Experience:

3 Key Pain Points Revealed

  • “I frequently forget to cancel subscriptions or free trials, even when I realize I don't need them. I tell myself I'll cancel later, but then it slips my mind again.”

  • “My main concern is data security.”

  • “I would like the app to suggest affordable alternatives to the products and services I'm already using.”

Problem Statement

“Subscription management is forgetful and expensive. Users need a secure app to simplify this and help them save money.”

How Might We... ?

How might we make subscription/Renewal cancellation easily discoverable and readily accessible within the app?

How might we provide transparent and easily understandable information about the app's security measures?

How might we personalize the dashboard to show relevant subscription details and insights based on user preferences?

Phase 2: Design 1

User Flow

Pain points to priorities: This MVP roadmap tackles the top 3 user issues for a smooth experience.

Design System

Sketches

Building a user-centric subscription management app starts with a solid foundation. This initial phase involved creating a series of UX sketches to explore core functionalities and user flows.

Phase 3: Validate 1

Usability Testing #1

To ensure my design effectively addressed user needs, I conducted a round of usability testing with five participants. Low-fidelity wireframes were used for this initial round, allowing for rapid iteration and feedback gathering on core functionalities before investing heavily in design details.

Phase 4: Design 2

High Fidelity Wireframes

This set of high-fidelity wireframes incorporates the valuable insights gained from the initial round of usability testing.

Phase 5: Validate 2

Usability Testing #2

The second round of usability testing, conducted with five new participants, yielded valuable insights regarding user preferences. A clear majority of the interviewees expressed a strong desire to see the "expiration date" displayed for each subscription. This information, provided a more complete picture of their subscription commitments, allowing them to make informed decisions about management and potential cancellations. By incorporating the expiration date functionality, we can empower users to take greater control of their subscriptions and optimize their financial well-being.

Reflections & Learnings

The UX design process for this subscription dashboard app truly highlighted the power of user research. Usability testing proved to be an eye-opener, constantly revealing new details to improve the design. It emphasized how interviews, competitive research, and UX design work together like well-oiled gears – each step feeding into and shaping the next. The importance of user-friendly language also became crystal clear. Simple, concise text and an intuitive navigation system became the foundation of the app, ensuring a smooth and effortless experience for everyone.

Next Steps

The current version of the mobile subscription management app offers a strong base for user control and financial awareness. Future development plans will introduce advanced features like budgeting tools, further enhancing the user experience with gamification elements. To expand the app's global reach, user research in target markets and app localization are all crucial next steps. By implementing these features and expanding globally, the app can empower users and become a leading subscription management tool worldwide.
