The Problem

Tools

Figma Miro Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator

Cancer patients, caregivers, and others facing cancer often feel stressed when trying to find useful cancer information and support. Existing resources often lack user-friendly navigation, leaving them frustrated and helpless. Personalized financial guidance is scarce, intensifying anxiety during their cancer journey.

The Solution

Cancer Relief strives to bridge these gaps, offering a solution that is intuitive, supportive, and empathetic, making the cancer journey more manageable for everyone involved.

Unearthed Emotional Gold

Themes and insights about coping, support, and resilience from cancer patients and caregivers.

Research really opened my eyes

I conducted 5 interviews, which included both cancer caregivers and cancer patients, and from these sessions, I was able to draw the following insights:

Synthesizing these insights made me come up with the following:

Problem Statement

“As a cancer patient, I want to get all the information about cancer in one place so that I can take a load off my mind by not wasting time on untrustworthy websites.”

How might we…?

  1. Provide Emotional resources during and after diagnosis.

  2. Simplify access to financial aid.

  3. Connect users with effective support like counseling & support groups.

  4. Ensure app accessibility for all.

  5. Enhance user-friendliness for tech novices.

Target Users

From the research I was able to come up with two personas and prioritize features to support them.

User Flow

Based and research and user interviews the sitemap below organizes the order of the app MVP that includes 5 main features that were the most important pain points of the users.

User Flow 1: All about cancer

User Flow 2: Emotional & Mental Health

Mood Board

Cancer Relief is an app that aims to alleviate sadness and negative emotions in users by infusing hope in a positive manner, utilizing a calming color palette, and incorporating green, which is also associated with health.

Sketches

Once I got an understanding of the users, their tasks and stories, I started sketching design solutions. The process of sketching enables me to visualize different ideas and try to out content placement. Through this, I was able to get the layout and flow that works best for my target user. I also tested these initial sketches with some user segments to receive quick feedback.

Usability Testing #1

I tested these wireframes on 5 users to focus on flow and functionality to create a layout that would work best for my users.

Reflections & Learnings

One of the biggest takeaways, if not the biggest, is to avoid spending excessive time on the UI aspects. Additionally, I discovered the significance of gamification in apps across various domains, particularly in more advanced subjects. Gathering extensive feedback from field specialists during the early stages and throughout the development process is crucial. Obtaining feedback from medical professionals would have been invaluable for the app's design. This experience proved to be unique, broadening my perspective and encouraging me to seek unconventional solutions.

Next Steps

The next steps would involve conducting further usability testing with medical doctors or professionals in the healthcare field. Additionally, I intend to incorporate gamification elements into the app to enhance user engagement and enjoyment. Moreover, I would like to integrate relaxing music playlists into the app to promote a sense of calm and well-being.
